duke and law

TRAPPER,
HOW I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU…………….

P.S. “OBEDIENT” ???? J)))

R.C. HENDRICKSON “DU”

John Wayne: What the Scout Law means to me
A great American, John Wayne, passed away many years ago. One of his last public appearances was at a dinner. He was riddled with cancer and knew he was close to death. The purpose of the dinner was to benefit a land purchase for a Scout Reservation called John Wayne Outpost Camp. At this dinner, Wayne recited the Scout Law. Then he did something unusual, he said the twelve points of the Scout Law are "nice words". "Trouble is" he continued. "we learn them so young we sometimes don't get all the understanding that goes with them. I take care of that in my family. As each boy reaches Scout age, I make sure he learns the Scout Law. Then I break it down for him, with a few things I have picked up in more than half a century since I learned it." Then Wayne proceeded to explain the importance of the Scout Law, breaking it down for the guests at the dinner; much like he would have for his grandson.

TRUSTWORTHY The badge of honesty. Having it lets you look at any man in the eye. Lacking it he won't look back. Keep this one at the top of your list.
LOYAL The Very word is life itself, for without loyalty we have no love of person or country
HELPFUL Part sharing, part caring. By helping each other, we help ourselves, not to mention mankind. Be always full of help -- the dying man's last words.
FRIENDLY Brotherhood is part of that word. You can take it in a lot of directions - and do - but make sure and start with brotherhood.
COURTEOUS Allow each person his human dignity which means a lot more than saying, "yes ma'am" and "thank you sir". It reflects an attitude that later in life you wish you had honored more... earlier in life. Save yourself that problem. Do it now.
KIND This one word would stop wars and erase hatreds. But its like your bicycle, its just no good unless you get out and use it.
OBEDIENT Starts at home. Practice it in your family. Enlarge it in your friends. Share it with humanity.
CHEERFUL Anyone can put on a happy face when the going is good. The secret is to wear it as a mask for your problems. It might surprise you how many others do the same thing. THRIFTY Means a lot more than putting pennies away, and it is the opposite of cheap. Common sense covers it just about as well as anything.
BRAVE You don't have to fight to be brave. Millions of good, fine, decent folks show more bravery than heavyweight champs just by getting out of bed every morning, going out to do a good day's work and living the best life they know how against the law of odds.
CLEAN Soap and waters help a lot on the outside. But it is the inside that counts and don't ever forget it.
REVERENT Believe in anything that you want to believe in, but keep God at the top of it. With Him, life can be a beautiful experience. Without Him, you are just biding time

My Dad, Larger than Life

It's been about 3 weeks now and I still can't believe your gone. Not an hour has passed where I haven't thought about you and hardly a night goes by I haven't dreamed of you at least once. I miss you. I miss the hugs, laughs and the simultaneous sensation of your beard as it scraped my face and the smell of your old spice aftershave. You always smelled so good. You were always so clean. I guess it's time for me to accept and let go, but I can't seem to do it.

How could someone so strong be taken so fast. After all, Dad, you were Larger than Life. So, I will continue to improve myself and honor you by being the father my children deserve, the husband my wife deserves, the friend my friends deserve and the son you deserve. I know I should have made more time with you the past few years and I am sorry. I wish I could turn back the clock. I'll see you when I get there, Dad. Sail on.....

I also wanted to thank all who came to the celebration. Special thanks go out to you, Uncle Paul, for taking charge when I could hardly function. Also, Barbara Vosbury and the EYC staff. My brother, Michael Z. Thank you to Uncle Cool, Aunt Marilyn, cousins Davy, Carrie Marie, Jodi and Kimmi. Was so good to see you. Hope to see you all at the 4th of july reunion in Riverton with the rest of the Lippincotts.

A note of thanks from Paul

For those of you who were able to attend Trapper’s Celebration of Life last Friday, thank you so much. It couldn’t have been a better way to send off my brother, his close family and friends at a wonderful gathering. The weather was perfect, the boats were perfect, the Navy’s Guard and the bagpipes being in attendance were excellent as well. Over 250 people signed the register, and many stayed the entire time from 11:00 am to after 5:00pm!

Many folks that I haven’t seen in over 30 years came, and the story’s just kept on comin! I know it’s been done, but I sincerely want to thank everyone involved, especially the folks at Eastport Yacht Club, headed up by Barbara Vosbury, who took most all of the burden of organizing that wonderful event .

The support I have received from Trapper’s and our family & friends, has been and continues to be appreciated and warming. Words are not enough, but THANK YOU so much for being there, if not in person, but in thoughts as well.

XXXXXXXOOOOOOO to Trap, love you and miss you. Love, Paul

Finish Line

Wraslin' the Bear

All
Most have heard the "Wraslin' the bear" tale and its variations. Mayhaps he DID beat the bear!
The Big C was one hell of a bear and the bear won this time.
I posted the attached at EYC after the memorial. I was concerned that I would offend but that was not the case happily. A copy is available for all who request it at merf@merforiginals.com or just download the attached jpeg if thats computer-doable. Most printers will accept card stock.
A further thought. Since his sailing to the other side I had been searching for the proper words to capture what he meant to me and lots of other folks at EYC. It finally came together in my brainbox at the service. Trap exemplified the "Beauty of Simpification". While complicated internally... he made it all simple and it all made sense to those who knew him.

A Life Celebration

What an amazing day to celebrate Trapper's life ! Clear skies with glorious sun beaming down, low humidity, temp in the low 70s and a 10-15knot breeze. Perfect weather for Trap’s last sail.

As the celebration wound down, I headed down the pier for a final goodbye. Hoisting a final tot with him, the last drops of his Glenlivet hit the bay as a group of juniors raced by to practice mark rounding. Oblivious to the hallowed waters they were treading on, that is the way Trap would want it. Sail on, my friend.

Shooting Star

A shooting star that burned brightly, now extinguished,

gently and genuinely enriching the lives of all who had the fortune to be illuminated by his journey through life.

Jenny and I join with all of Trap's friends in passing our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the Lippincott family for our loss.

I've always liked the attached picture and thought it should be shared.

Stand by Me

From Vincent McDermott

MY OLD FRIEND

The news of your passing has tested my memory banks of the many happy years living, working and mostly playing when you where with us during our youth in Riverton. Alan did the best cowardly lion impression ever, and his practical jokes at the Lippincott boat works were so funny I often laughed so hard it would tear me up. He was our big, brave and gentle bear of a friend.

I celebrate with you his life. We shall sail on another day. This old song reminds me of my friend Alan “Trapper” Lippincott

When the night has come
And the land is dark,
And the moon is the only light we'll see.
No I won't be afraid,
Oh I won't be afraid,
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darlin' darlin' stand by me,
Oh stand by me,
Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me.

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall,
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea.
I won't cry, I won't cry,
No I won't shed a tear,
Just as long as you stand, stand by me.

And darlin' darlin' stand by me,
Oh stand by me,
Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me.

Darlin' darlin' stand by me,
Oh stand by me,Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me.
Whenever you're in trouble
just stand by me,Oh stand by me,
Whoa stand now, oh stand, stand by me.,
by B King

My condolences to the entire Lippincott Family. Thanks Paul

Larger than Life

Trapper,

You were larger than life, I knew this from the first time I met you. We were sailing on L’outrage, I think it was a race to Baltimore. You kept telling Bruce, go to the beach. We skirted the shore line and slid and across the openings of rivers and creeks. You kept talking about the river slide and kept looking for those elusive zephyrs. You always would say look thru these sunglasses, you need the right ones to see the Zephyrs. All the time you had that big devious grin on your face.

I watched you sail your beloved star boat and you always helped others along the way. After the races you would often hold court in the yard behind the boats, it was always great to here your stories. You always managed to have the boat box stocked and ready to go.
You were always at the club and held your traditional place at the end of the bar. I think you sat there so that could greet everyone that came in. It seemed that every one knew you and were always happy to see you. The kids were always excited to see there uncle Trap and always wanted to climb up on your lap. It amazed me that every one that came knew you and were always happy that you were there.

You always brought a smile to every one face that you came in contact with, Trap you were larger life.

Go with speed and the graces of the wind

Old Times

Not at all sure if this will work, but I am writing to reflect on some early times sailing with Trapper. I crewed for him on his Duster in the 1960's. During the Nationals, a shroud came off the spreader tip and I went up the mast to try and re-attach it. Everyone thought Trapper had gotten angry and chased me up the mast, but that is NOT true! What was remarkable is that he kept the boat upright in spite of heavy air and a nasty chop, and me up the mast! It was a lesson in seamanship beyond his racing ability.
Over the last 12 years, I would visit him at SSA in my travels, and we talked about things beyond sailing. I came to realize he was much more complex than remembered as a schoolboy. He had taken up painting in oils for a time, and had some startling things to say about his life.
Despite not seeing him much, I will always remember him for his outrageous humor and outlandish pranks. And I will miss him, as much as his very extended family (whether related or not).
My best wishes to all of his family, friends, and sailors.

The Early Years.......

I can speak to the early years of Trappers life. I met the Trap in July 1951 when I moved next door as a young buck. He and brother Dave were sitting in a little kiddie pool in their backyard as we pulled up to our new house in Riverton, NJ. Parked across the street in an empty lot was father Stan Lippincott's Star boat. I have memories of Little Trapper and Dave collecting frogs and turtles from the nearby Delaware river and along with some furry critters they had the first petting zoo of it's kind that I know of. But mostly I remember him fondly as the Jokester extraordinaire and one hell of a sailor. My favorite story took place circa 1966. It was a cold night and us underage teens were tuning-up with some beer in preparation for the Friday night trip to the local record hop. We were drinking in the storage shed at the Lippincott Boat Works and Trap was trying to expedite us as he broke our onions about how slow we drank and how fast he was. It was very dark in there and suddenly we heard the sound of running water, was it? What's that noise? Cousin Jimmy remarked, and he bent over to look under the boat where the sound seemed to be coming from. Then.........."Trapper, you're busted!" It seems that the sound was beer dripping from the stock boat we were standing next to. Trapper had been pouring out his beer into the hull of that boat..........but the bail-or was open and it ran straight out and formed a puddle of foam. Jimmy broke his chops for weeks after that. A classic Trapper trick.

So God bless and keep you mon Trap, gone but never forgotten.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

By: Alfred Lord Tennyson

Trapper,
We wish you a fond farewell and we know that you are in God’s special place and resting peacefully, and enjoying the company of those that left before you, Basil, Monte, “the Jit man” and Marjorie, you were a great friend to us all and we will miss you!

Rest in peace my brother!

Gob Bless You Trapper

Dear Trap,

I know this note finds you well and that you had a peaceful sail home, But I feel like such a fool, I didn't know you would be leaving so soon. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. Once again you have shocked me. But that was your way wasn't it? You always knew where to find the right wind and that it would take you where you needed to be, whether the rest of us knew it or not. You did the right thing and I know you are happy now, but I miss you. I miss you terribly. I wasn't ready for you to go. Could I ever have been? Surely not, that's inconceivable. You meant too much to me.

I went to the Club tonight, just to feel you a bit. I haven't been there in months and didn't expect much without you there. I was wrong. You were everywhere. It was so touching to see your chair adorned with a spray of wheat grass and dusty miller tied across it with a black bow. Your chair is reserved forever. Juanita still has a scotch sitting there for you, just in case, and your friends were there comforting each other in your absence. It was weird - the moment so full of you and empty of you at the same time. Will I really not see you again? Is that possible? No, surely not.

We will be all be together again some day. In the mean time, you must know, I love you, I miss you and always will. But you are in the right place now, I know that. The comfort we can all take is that God now holds you in his arms and that you are warm and peaceful in safe harbor. Please save us all a place in the good seats for when we can join you.

With undying love,
Tantzi

From Tarp

Trapper,
Although are paths have not crossed as often as I would have liked this past decade or so, when they did you were still the fun loving, gentle, kind giant of a man as you were when I first met you in 1964 at the RYC. While reading the comments on your blog I realize that you have many friends and family that love you. I am sure you are extremely proud of what Paul has done - not just for you, but for all of us who now have a chance to say We will miss you and the joy that you brought to all of our lives. I have Hope, so I will see you again. Take care for now.
Ciao,

Trapps

I grew up sailing with and against Trapper sailing Dusters at Riverton Yacht Club. This was the home of Lippincott Boat Works, where Trapper and his Uncles and Cousins worked and built
Stars, Comets and Lightnings. Trapper had a Duster named EBFM he said it meant Every Body Follow Me, we were not so sure, but it seemed to work a lot.

Trapper become one of the premier crews in his prime. He crewed for his cousin Jimmy, Durwood Knowles and many others.
I still have great memories of attending "functions" (and event with good groceries (food) and cocktails) and hanging out at the Riverton Yacht Club parking lot with the gang. Later on hanging out at Eastport Yacht Club, which in later years became his host club.

As Trapper goes off to meet up with his cousin Jimmy at the great regatta in the sky, we miss him. But as we move on with great memories we know that Trapper is entertaining a large group.

Terry Rapp
From Cousin Tom

Paul,
I'm sitting here with a crooked grin on my face... kind of a choked up smile...Trap was always larger then life to me. The one cousin who made me wish Iwas older so I could hang out with him. One summer in the 80's I crewed for Trap all summer, I think we won the Spring series, Oxford regatta and Fall windup! Inever liked sitting up front but when Trapper asked me if I wanted to crew there was no hesitation, I had a blast laughing my way around the buoys all summer! I have been following the blog and mentioned to Skip today that I wanted to go see him on Wednesday...He called me back and said Trap had passed.

Larger then life, with a heart as big as they come.

Let me know if there is anything I do.
Cousin Tom
From Terry Rapp,

I was saddened to hear of Trapps passing. He was a great guy and a good friend. I was sorry that I did not get a chance to see him, but our prayers are with you and your family.

Terry and Mary Rapp

Trap!!

Had to think awhile, try to wrap this around my head...Trapper is gone!!

No longer will I (improper bow) hear from a proper stern person, "There's a zephyr overthere...We need to be over there" and, as I was reminded tonight, "Dammit, Bruce,we're RIVER sailing!

"Summers as a child, in Oxford, with all the Lippincotts, later with a family marriage, related!!

We will ALL miss you, my man, you're with Jimmy, and the rest of the famous family. But you carved your own niche in many places: life, your place at EYC, many numerous boats,my soul...

Trap, from a friend of years (and yours), here's to you!May you always be on the favored side of the race course, with fair winds and a screwy river current, so you will always come out on top...

Love to you,

A Toast to Trapper

For Trapper... Ever a Constant in the EYC family
Dot Leonard
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide,
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
Ana all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.
by John Masefield (1878-1967)
From Josh Phypers

Hi Barbara,

Over the years I have known Trapper from the two of you happily sailing together.

He was almost always smiling and warm and seemed to always have a host of friends around him at regattas with many belly laughs going on – a real genuine man.

My family has kept him in our prayers these last months and I’m very sad to hear of his passing.

But, It feels good though – to know that after all of the racing, sailing and competing Trapper did in his life; he has won the most important competition – which is to leave a legacy that he was a really good man who was respected by all those who knew him.

He will be remembered and missed.

Son of a Son of a Sailor from Rick Peters

While doing my daily check of the Star Class website this morning I was saddened to learn of Trapper's passing. During my day I recollected a few images of him from the time we spent together at Star regattas.

Telling his story about Tom Blackaller coming to visit the shop. Trapper was hauling the wooden keel mold around on his back pretending he was going to collapse at any moment, telling Tom "It's OK, I got it, no problem, just getting your new Star finished up!". Blackaller was horrified, thinking that it was an actual cast iron keel, "What kind of shop are the Lippincotts running here", also wondering "What had they been feeding him"!

Nobody in the Star Class knew how to stock a trailer box better than Trapper, even though he tended to wear his shiny silver spandex hiking suit much later into cocktail hour than the rest of us!

I will always remember Trapper as an unassuming character, full of life, happy just to be there, always willing to lend a hand, and quick with a funny story.

Trapper Lippencott lived a life that was absolutely full.
Full of friends, laughs, stories and humility.
A simple man that was certainly not full of bull.
EYC, he loved more than all.
The members, his adopted brothers and sisters.
Although not all adored.
The petty politics he never explored.
As God has taken our Star sailor friend,
We all stop a pray God̢۪s angels have Trapper̢۪s favorite Scotch Whisky blend.

From Curt Wells

All,

Nicely done Alex and Jon, my turn.

What I admire and remember most about Trapper is he was a giver. I never
raced Star boats but we would talk for hours about tiny aspects of the
sailboat racing game. He truly loved the sport and there were no secrets.
Trapper shared all he knew (and he knew a lot) with whomever would listen.
He had access (through his employer) to these tiny mints that would explode
into your mouth and knock your socks off. Every month he would mention that
he might be able to get his hands on the very last container on the East
Coast. He'd run down to his car, grab a tin of mints and return. I of
course bought him a drink and had my mint supply for the month. This went
on for years.

Trapper loved to tell stories. Deliveries in and around the Islands, Mon
were his favorite. I would listen for hours on the deck of EYC as he spoke
of navigating back to Annapolis with only a compass, a VHF radio and one
Island chart as his tools. "I know the bay, who needs a chart" he would
query. Simple logic, but still..... I too celebrate his passing. Learn
from his humble giving, and his lack of need for the material things in
life. I aspire to selfessly share as he did, to truly give to others
without expecting anything in return. I miss his life lessons and welcome
the day we meet again on the other side of God's race course.

All,
Very nice words Jon so let Sanford and I fold in ... while we will all miss Trapper, let us celebrate him for the man he was! He chose his life and lived it well!! He was not caught up in the BS but loved a simple and humble life! I for one will always think of him with fondest memories and am relieved he is no longer in pain. While he may not be in this world with us, he is in another, meeting old friends and family long gone and missed! In fact, I am sure he stood beside us in Boatyard this morning for brunch, placing his hand on our shoulders and saying, have a drink for me but don't hurry to get here ... when you do, I will be here to greet you!
He IS well loved and will always be with us! That is what we MUST remember. Sanford and I do not grieve but celebrate the fact that we knew him and shared great times with him while he was on this side of God's race course!
He IS WELL LOVED by all of us!
Cheers to Trapper!

Alan Lippincott- Jon Hilbert

It's with great sadness and a heavy heart to hear that Alan (Trapper) Lippincott died this morning.

We lost a great friend & a wonderful person.

Trapper is no longer with us and I'm going to miss him terribly.EYC just won't seem the same anymore without Trap there watching his NASCARand talking about his Eagles.

We were so looking forward to watching the Ravens play the Eagles on November 23rd.We started talking trash when the schedule came out. He couldn't wait for the game.

Is he really gone or out sailing on a Starboat somewhere.

I know this where ever he is there is a Starboat close by.

We're going to miss you old friend and may you rest in peace.

Sept 21 again, and Note from Dottie and Marie

Happy was there at the end, soon to be followed by Michael. I will be in charge with the arrangements, and will keep eveyone appraised as time goes on. Eastport Yacht Club had a mellow event this evening to celebrateTrappers life. Something tells me this is not the last of these events.

To follow us a note from cousin Dotttie and Marie in NYC.

Love,

Paul

Dear Paul and Amy,
Marie and I just learned the news from your blog. It surely happened faster than I expected, but that might be a blessing. Liver cancer is unforgiving and he suffered enough. I just hope you were able to let him know that we were thinking of him. Even though we are far away... I still remember a lot of the Lippincotts over my lifetime. Family is family.
Please check with the VA regarding benefits. He is entitled to a vault to cover the casket (if you have that kind of funeral) also a plot for himself and his wife, a headstone (engraved .. no cost) and military ceremony. Ours was disappointing .. just folded flag and taps... but they told me most of the men were on Bagdad duty.
Also the family is entitled to a certificate signed by the President which was degreed by former President Kennedy. We got ours. (no cost)
We are so very sad but he has gone to a place where there are lots of Lippincotts to greet him... I know our parents will be there.
Please let us know any information regarding the funeral.
Cousin Dotty

Paul, as I read through the blog I saw what an awesome advocate you were on your brother's behalf when he was no longer able to speak for himself. You did a wonderful job. It is a difficult role- one of the hardest and most important in life. I'm sure Alan was proud of you. My deepest sympathy --and my love to you and your family.

A Sailor's Life...

A sailor's life these days has changed
not what it used to be
among those things now re-arranged
are the days we spend at sea

and so the structure of the craft
and how we learn to sail
the Comet, Star and so the raft
is more by try and fail

so as we serve and strike for rate
we each look for a role
to help us find if our own fate
is written on our soul

and a lucky few have shared a berth
with a true and solid mate
a sailor who has sailed the earth
and stood to every fate

whose example kept the nippers square
and whose thoughts improved my skill
but it was mostly joy that he did share
and I recall it still

you know Trapper, my ole mate
he truly is the best
and when I face my final fate
he'll help me pass the test

As expectations were high based on the last couple of days, today was not that way. Trap was mostly sleeping , and when we, Amy, Kim , Happy (Traps ex), and I, did our normal things like scratching his beard, rubbing his chest, etc., he didn't respond favorably. Hopefully tomorrow will provide a happier mode. Happy is spending the night at the VA this evening.

Sept 19th visit,

Amy and I went down later in the day today and found Mike Z and many of the Eastport Yacht Club clan. As yesterday, Trap was more responsive and clearly more talkative than earlier in the week. He is on a lower but more often dose of pain meds which I believe keeps him awake more, and more cognitive. This would be a good time for any who have been waiting to visit, to come. Trap does recognize his people, and clearly appears to appreciate it. Things change daily, so who knows what tomorrow brings, but now is a good a time as ever to say hi. The unfortunate reality is, his condition has developed to the point that he may not have a tremendous amount of time left, I'm afraid. A difficult thing to say, REAL DIFFICULT, but his family and friends should know.

Love,

Paul

Sept 18th visit.

When I arrived, Michael Z and cousin Ron were present. Then Bob Flower showed up followed by my girls, Jodi and Kim. Trap was mostly sleeping but felt, recognized and acknowledged the presence of his guests when he was awake. He seemed a bit weaker than yesterday. Mike Z was there until midnight last night and arrived a 9:30 this morning, and is still there at this writing, 10:00 pm. Mike and Trap, not to mention Barb V, are best of friends. I truely believe (I probably said this before, but I'm not going back to check), Trap has more visitors than anyone at the VA hospital, and I'm sure he appreciates it.

Love,

Paul

September 17th visit,

Upon my arrival today I met with cousin Richard Lip, and we had an exellent meeting for quite a while. I woke Trap up and told him his mouth was in better condition because of the rehydration and aloe cream, but I was not going to kiss him there. I think I heard him say "kiss my ass" ! Not 100% sure but, I think that is what he said, we had quite a laugh about that. He is mostly sleeping, seems relatively comfortable, and is still garnering awsome care from his providers.

That's it for now,

Love, Paul

Sept 15 & 16th visits.

To all friends and famliy,

Sorry for the lack of info lately as I was home sick for days and was not able to visit Trap, didn't want to give them more to do then they already have now. During that time, and mostly the last few days, he has taken a turn for the worse. Things don't look as promising as in the recent past. The VA is continuing to battle his mounting complications, and they are mounting at a rapid pace. This hospital has a phenominal duty and ethic to help and attend to their veterans. We are fortunate to have their services available to Trap.

Will keep everyone informed as time progresses.

Love,

Paul

Good Email and Pics from Charles and Tracie

Trap,
I want you to know how much you have meant to me over the years. When you first took us under your wing and packed us in the Vega and took us to the Riverton Yacht Club; when you tirelessly traveled from Oxford to Palmyra and back countless times in the Rabbit; when you showed us how to drop kick the football at Grand-Stan's; when you showed us that you could sink a floating bumblebee with a BB Gun from 15 feet (in one shot); you always showed us that power came from someplace other than your biceps; when you gave us a greater appreciation for the water and for sailing; when you shared the Cinnabar and the Star; when you showed us how to eat the solt shelled clams at Pier Street; when you showed us that a 9.9 HP on old Woody could make a true 2 knots into a stiff current and that the true joy was going for the ride not getting there; when you showed us how much food was stored within a chicken bone (ugh, never did get over that one); when you found the humor in sinking the Parmelee at the dock.... I may have grown up but I have never forgotten the acceptance, generosity and love that you showed Mike and me. In a time and situation when kids need love, Bulla, we were blessed to have crossed paths with you. When I am steaming towards the yellowfin tuna at the Canyon, when I am putting a eye splice or bowline made fast around a cleat, you will forever be on my mind and in my prayers. Thank you Trapper. I love you,
Charles

Wed Sept 10th,

I wasn't going in again today, however his oncology doc called in the morning with some great news. His Liver tumour has decreased by two thirds, one third of the size then when the treatments were started! That's un fffffff believeable! His case is more hopeful now, however he needs to get nutrition and fluids, he's very dehydrated, and not always lucid. So I blasted back to the VA to tell him personally instead of a doc telling him . I think he got the message. Visitors must understand that his is very drawn, doesn't say much, but is on the mend, I believe. Next week a feeding tube for nutrition.

Love,

Paul

Tuesday, Sept 9th,

Trap didn't seem as with it today. I think his refusal to eat much is having an effect on him. He is scheduled to get a feeding tube, but not until next week.. I am going to try by whatever means to speed that time peroid up. This is not a cure all, but it should give a head start on nurishment after his shunt installation.

Paul

Sunday, Sept. 7th.

Trap was awake most all of my visit today, which tells me he is recovering from the op. He actually let me feed him one lousy (1) cube of his fruit cup. Wow. He also asked for some of my iced tea I brought as a break from the water. Anyhow, he was improved which makes me happier. I am lobbying for a feeding tube if this no-food-intake persists, he must get some nutrition or the oncologist will not resume the chemo which is critical to his survival. The oncologist is on my side here and on Monday I will speak the liver doc, Dr. White to help this process along also. So - - - step 1 shunt . done, step 2 nutrition by whatever means, step 3 resume chemo, step 4 physical therapy, step 5, jumping jacks.

I think he may be ready for visits now, although he didn't say so.

Until later,

Love, Paul

Trapper and the Flat Belly Diet ;-)

Sept 5th update.

Trap is back in his nice room on 2 - D in the main hospital. He had the sweetest nurse today, extremely helpful. His stomach is as flat as ever, and there is less labour in his breathing and his color looked more normal. Trap didn't have but a few words to say, slept most of the time I was there, still pretty weak from the op. He has to push on an installed pump in his gut 10+ times per day to keep it from filling up. It is an actual manual pump imbedded under his skin in his gut cavity. Again, this recycles his fluids back in his bloodstream where it came from and saves his proteins. I believe he will soon be moved back to his room at the extended care residence facility, again great care and attention. I spoke to the liver doc today who installed the shunt, and he is pleased how the procedure went.

Now what he needs to do is EAT and/or DRINK HIS ENSURE. He needs the strength to battle this horrible disease, and to take the chemo regimen.

I asked if he would like visits, and he said not yet. However, no one can control what his friends want to do! By the way, his cell phone is not with him, and will be when he is moved from the surgical ward back to the living facility.

Love,

Paul

Surgery Update

Sept 3-5,

3rd - - As Barb said, today Trap was moved to 2-D the surgical wing for his prepping for the shunt. This is by far the brightest and cheeriest room he has yet to have, although he probably wont' be there but only a few days. He has an air mattress which moves softly and keeps his blood moving and prevents bed sores. His phone is off as mentioned earlier as he is pretty weak and sleepy.

4th - - He left for surgery prep at 7:30 and had is shunt installed successfully thereafter. He was then moved to the recovery room to revive and stabilize him, and has now been moved into the ICU. All standard procedure for post op I am told. Trap will remain groggy until later this evening, but should be fairly cognizant tomorrow, and hopefully back into his room. We'll see what shape he is in tomorrow regarding visitation and will report back ASAP. But right now he just needs rest.

5th -- Surgery went well, he was in recovery all afternoon. I will visit today and hopefully he will be back in his room.

This shunt will hopefully make Trap regain his desire to eat and drink, with all that fluid in his gut gone for good (recycled in his blood stream) and make him strong like Bull.

Prayers please.

Love,

Paul

Important Procedure today!

Trapper is scheduled to have the shunt installed today. Yesterday he was moved to the hospital and prepped for the surgery. Keep your fingers crossed and the prayers coming!

Visit from Merf

Went to see Trapper today... Monday 1 Sept, Labor Day. Arrived about noon and found him dozing but in discomfort. Brought him a copy of Spinsheet, and Chesapeake Bay. Also thought he would enjoy the latest MAD with Alfred E O'Bama on the cover holding a banner "Yes We Can't!" Only MAD! Got a chuckle from him on that.
All said, he was pretty uncomfortable. A nurse came by with more pills but left to return later. Said she was constantly pestering him. Cant validate one way or the other but we chatted later and I am sure she is sincere and very caring.
So ITrap and I chatted for a bit.... mostly me. His main comment was "This is tough, man...tough". Surely is and tough to watch this great guy have to endure it. `
He was really tired and wanted to try to sleep so I left... passing on all the regards, hopes and love of the EYC folks and others.

Sept 30 visit,

For those who are calling, don't be alarmed. At present Trap has his phone off most of the time, as he is going through one of his tough times. He fell again trying to get to the head on Saturday evening. He's too damned stubborn or proud to ask for assistance to do so. We called for x rays while Amy & I were there Sunday as Trap said his hip was very sore. They thankfully turned out negative. His shunt should be installed mid this week which should make him much more comfortable. He can't really hold anything down due to the pressure on his stomach due to is gut cavity being bloated to the max with fluid. His blood work looks good and his chemo is being increased. Lets just hope they get that shunt in ASAP, as brother Trap is miserable right now.

Thanks for all you prayers and concern,

Paul

Paul Updates

Aug 27th and 29th visits -

As Barbara V has told you all, Trap is in a living facility attached to the hospital. This is a positive move as he has even better care without the constant bothersome visits from the learning staff. As Barb mentioned, and I saw as well, his first day at the new spot (Wednesday) was a bit hard on him, however he rose to the occasion. Alot going on.

Today (29th) was a productive day. I arrived a half hour after Barb left just after a dose of pain reduction medicine. Trap was in a rather a good mood and we spoke frankly. His gut is huge with fluids, very uncomfortable, and his urology staff didn't want to drain it before the holiday for reasons I was not quite sure. Screw that! Sooooooooo, I met with the chief oncologist and the the premier liver surgeon, Dr. White, to discuss a better plan. After a long session, it was agreed that that a Lavine shunt should be applied into Trap. Basically a tube that recycles his fluids into his system, rather than depositing them in his gut for draining and waste. This will be a constant relief to his fluid build up, and retains his bodily protiens that are leaving him when he has a mere cavity drain. After a meeting with Trap, he agreed, and we will give them a definite answer Monday. Many positives, little negatives. Better mobility, retaining of proteins, hopefully better appetite, less intrusions into body, more ambulatory, no more build up of fluids, better strength build up, and better muscle retention.

By the way, overall systemic results are still heading in a positive direction. His cell phone is off more because he wants a bit more rest, but keep trying. He loves to hear from his many friends and supporters.

His chemo is being upped quite a bit tomorrow for the pills and the med port application next week. Attack!

Love,
Paul

Traps New Digs!!

Trapper was moved today to the living facility next to the hospital. He is in a room with three other people. Although I think two of them are quite mobile, as they were not there when we arrived, maybe we should hold off on the dancing girls for a while ;-)

His room number is 2K-142 and is in Building 6, second floor. The phone number to use is his cell number--Trapper is good about turning it off when he needs rest and returning calls when he is up to it. This room is a little harder to get to, just ask directions is the best I can tell you.

Just after Trap and I got to his new digs Juanita and KW arrived (followed a little while later by Justin). The nurses got him from the gurney to his bed and we flowed back into the room. A few minutes later another nurse brought him a new jug of water and informed Trap that she would be back to take his vitals. We introduced ourselves as Trap's entourage. In the meantime an old friend Ken Kemple called him. So here we are hanging out while Trap is on the phone. The nurse comes back and interrupts Trap to say "your entourage is important but I am your number one fan and I need to get your vitals". I think he will enjoy being in this place.

This facility has many things to do once Trap is more mobile. I was joking with him about playing pool when he was up to the task!!! (got a good eye roll out of that!) There is a game room, a rooftop with tables and chairs so he can get some sunshine. The board outside the elevator was advertising for an evening concert and dogs and burgers that were sponsored by a some group (sorry, can't remember the name).

I know Paul has mentioned this before, but I am so impressed with the level of care and the friendliness of the docs and staff at this hospital. Trapper has a good rapport with all of them joking around when he can and being serious when he needs to. The group that took care of him on the 3rd Floor all stopped by to say good bye to him and to wish him luck in the new facility.

Trapper is lucky to have a great team working on his treatment and to have so many good friends who call, write and visit. He is truly loved and is overwhelmed by the amount of support he has received from all of you.

Quick note from Arlene Berlin

Spoke to Trapper today (Aug 26); hospital gave me wrong number. Luckily the correct one was posted on the website. Just talked for a few minutes. Trapper says he kind of feels like a truck hit him, and today he just wants to sleep.

¨Traps¨ from Paul

Aug 25 visit and update,

Trap was a bit tired upon my arrival this afternoon with physical and occupational therapy in the AM, however after a bite of chicken and a can of Ensure, he perked up quite a bit. He hasn't lost his sense of humor and ability to bust my #####. Wednesday he is supposed to move to the residence rooms, which he'll like much more as he won't be hassled as much, however still the same care. Barb V will be there in the morning to oversee the move, I'll attempt to make it earlier than usual also. I'm usually a late afternoon visitor after a partial day at the office. Traps condition is similar as before, the docs tell me to expect ups and downs during the chemo and multiple application processes. He's going through alot right now, but the battle is on and will continue.

Ding Free Regatta: From Peter Costa

The regatta was over at Milford, Ct. and for the first time in a long time I came away without any damage to my boat. You know the small stuff like dings from the docks and the like. Well, we all pulled the boats and some of us pushed them into the parking lot to give others room to get ready for the trip home. I was on my way to my car when I saw a Star boat rolling slowly down the incline toward my boat (which was on starboard tack) as it sat in the parking lot. I noticed Trapper trying to hold his boat back but he was just sliding on the crushed rock surface. After the port-starboard incident we both had a beer at the club and said, Sh*& happens. Almost a ding free regatta.

Trapper, your friends form the Boston Harbor Star Fleet send 12 to 14 kts of love and good vibes to you and hope to see you at the next regatta. We will lift a drink in your honor next weekend at the Star Master’s, North.

making star pie

Hi, all:

I just found these pics of Trapper from when he lived with us on Burnside in the good old MRE (5 years ago, I think).

Barbara, you will appreciate this. Trap was going to Thanksgiving at Casa de Vosbury and didn’t want to go empty handed, so he joined our family on “baking day” and we helped him make an apple pie. It even had a star on the crust! He was SO proud of that pie!

Love, Mel

Visit from the Munchkins, Pics

The Currier clan is off to visit Uncle Trap this morning. We’ll report in later on the adventure. Here are some pics of Trap with Charles (trap calls him Charlie) and Eleanor (trap nicknamed her nicki because every kid needs a nickname). I found these pictures from exactly a year ago on a Sunday afternoon at the club. You can see why they now climb the stairs at EYC and immediately run over to “Trap’s” stool for hugs and love and “secrets”. They both adore him!!!

Here are two more pics from the beach in Avalon, NJ (while daddy CB was sailing in the Heart Cup at good ol’ Ocean City YC). With Trap in the hospital, Eleanor is forced to explore the physics of stars all on her own. And Charles is sending a hearty AAAAAARG (them’s fightin’ words) to the evil pirates sailing around in Trapper’s belly.

More later! Melissa & CB, Charles & Eleanor

Update from Paul on 8-22-08

8-22-08

Trap had his first med port fed chemo today. It took approx 3 hours, ask Barb V., as she was there for the full measure. This is a great step in his therapy, however is takes the most toll on his system, again though, progress is made. He seemed to come out of it well, somewhat tired expectantly, but in good humor. Trap is now on the 3rd floor, the oncology level, which is a marked improvement in the staff knowledge. Again, he has been stepped up to 4 chemo pills per day as well as his med port application, which will happen again in two weeks. His new room is on the 3rd floor # 3EA bed 11, phone # 202 518 4760. 5 liters of fluid was drained from his gut cavity which always helps him feel more comfortable. I was approached by his team leader today and spoke with his head oncologist. They like the improvements he has shown but stress that he must be more mobile and ingest as much as possible.

Again, anyone visiting, please try to get him up and move around a bit. A stroller has been ordered to aid in his walking and his knee brace (the one he likes) was brought in today. The docs say that moving around, walking, eating, etc. is critical to the battle Trap has if front of him. He needs to improve his strength to be able to accept this hardest hitting chemo. So far, so good. Again, this floor seems much better to me as far as automatic care.

Possibly early next week there will be an opening in the residential attached facility, again more comfortable, however with the same level of care as now. As time goes on Trap needs less hospital room type applications, and more directed applications that can be occomplished at the resiential center. That's all good.

His oncology team leader today asked for a biopsy patholgy block that was performed in Annap a while ago. Although I retrieved slides of this before, they want additional films to send to Walter Reed Hospital for further analysis. No prob. These people don't stop with the research! I freakin love it!

Please Pray,

Paul

New floor for the weekend.

Trapper was moved down to the third floor today. This is the oncology patient floor and he should get more rest there. He is in room 3E228 (i think). Basically it is the hall directly below his 4th floor room. Go to the end of the hall and it is the last door on the left.

His chemo treatment went well today. He was tired afterward, but that was to be expected.

We are hoping the room in the living facility is open for him on Monday....will let you know.

Barbara

Juanita´s Version of her and KWs visit!!

Hello All from Juanita Hopkins,

KW and I went to see Trapper Wednesday morning. Directions from Barbara were great and easy to follow. It also helped that KW had been to the hospital the week before with Cathi Anderson. We took some food from Graul's (no salmon available) - egg salad, Swedish meatballs, chicken legs and cherries. He did eat some of the cherries and we found out when cousin Skipper called him, that he had just eaten all of his breakfast and that he felt pretty good that morning. I believe he told Skipper that he was doing jumping jacks.

From Trapper's end of the conversation he told Skipper that he was going to fight the fight, and burn all of this out of him. Then, like typical Trapper, he was asking Skipper how he was doing - always concerned about everyone close to him. They were reminiscing about old sailing days and Trapper was describing the picture of him and several other people from back in the day.

He was bloated and his feet and legs were swollen, but he said they were going to fix that on Thursday. He said he wished he could get a good night's sleep and wished the nurses didn't have to come in at night to check his vitals. One of the nurses had knocked his cell phone on the floor and he wasn't happy about that. He did mention that they had inserted the gizmo in his chest but made no other mention of the chemo treatments and said that he had the two best doctors around (heart and liver).

KW and I both had to get back to work so we left Trap to take a nap. KW and I talked on the ride home what a nice visit it was - not too short and not too long. We are shooting for a repeat performance next Wednesday.

Keep the faith and pray....a lot.

Juanita

KW and Juanita Visit Trap on Wednesday!

Juanita & I went to visit Trapper on Weds, Aug. 20 in the morning. It was an easy drive from Annapolis and only took about 40 minutes. The parking lot was packed but there’s valet parking & it’s free.

We took some treats from Graul’s prepared foods section & the deli. Not that much—just a few bites of this and that. He was in good spirits and his usual witty self. Cousin Skipper called and they had a nice long chat. Juanita & I eavesdropped shamelessly. Judging from his comments, he has a good positive outlook for his treatment program. He told Cousin Skipper he had talked to his “liver doc” and the doc told Trapper that he was the best damn liver doctor in the country. So Trapper sounded confident that he’s in good hands. He was bragging to his cousin that he had two women in his room and he was going to throw their clothes out the door & lock it. That gave us a laugh! He was asking for all the news & gossip from the yacht club and you know Juanita & I filled him in! We told him how all the kids at the yachts, especially the little girls, were asking for him.

We chatted a little bit more and had a chuckle at a picture of some of the Lippincott boys that looked to be taken in the mid 60s at some regatta in Florida. Wow, I forgot how goofy we all looked in the 60s. Trapper had dark hair & beard & was wearing flood pants. Then Paul called to say he was coming by later with the girls. Trap’s phone was ringing off the hook Weds morning! We stayed a little longer, but I had to get to work so we took off.

Funny thing: The attendants at the front desk of Trapper’s section that day were named Janet Jackson & Eddie Murphy.

Update from Paul 2 of 2

Trapper is now strong enough to get his first intravenously-fed chemo tomorrow (Friday) 9am through his med port! This will take 2.5 to 3 hours in a chemo "lounge chair" in a different floor of the hospital. Today they doubled his pill form from 2 to 4 per day, and will continue and increase that as well as his system allows. Probably said that before. More after tomorrow's (Fri) visit .

Paul

Update from Paul 1 of 2

Hello everyone,

Jodi, Kim and I went to see Trap on the 20th. He was greatly improved, attitude wise , physically and in appearance. He still cannot take the chemo through his med port as he is still too weak, but getting stronger, for that heavy treatment.. However he is responding to the pill form of chemo, and his cancer markers have begun to retreat, very positive. Since he is responding, his oncologist has doubled his chemo pills from 2 to 4 per day and will continue to add as he sees fit. His docs have informed him he has to be more active, so Trap has asked me bring in his knee brace so he can "get up and walk a bit", somehow they lost the one he came in with. Barbara Vosbury has bought two new knee braces for him but they weren't the kind he likes. So she and I will travel to where he lives and pick one of his up. Trap probably has more visitors and phone calls than anyone there at the VA Medical Center. He has been approved to stay at the living quarters, much nicer than a hosp room, attached to the Center where he wants to stay until he can fend for himself. It's full right now, but when a space becomes available he'll move right over. The docs will continue there, it's just a better environment for Trap.

As evident, this a more upbeat post. He is beginning to cooperate more regarding his nutrition, docs and nurses, and it has results in many positive ways.

Until next,

Paul

Update from Paul on 8/18/08

Trapper had his Med Port installed today the, 18th. Now he will receive the heaviest chemo drugs directly into the blood stream as well as the pill form, which will continue also. Had a little spill into the bathtub aiming for the head today while I was there, his strength is not what we are all used to. No broken anything, just a bit sore. He was a bit out of sorts during most of my visit today, to put it mildly, but I chalked it up to the line being installed, being drugged up a tad, and his spill. Trap also had an x ray to confirm the location of the port and it was confirmed to be correctly installed. The doctors are doing what they think is right, and they are the experts, not me or anyone else that are not oncologists. The battle is huge, his cancer is as well, and unfortunately has been there for some time. Systemic is the name for this type, not possible for a liver transplant since this type is not "primary" liver cancer, and has metasthesized (sp?) from other areas. Tonight will be another cat scan to search for all locations, however he is being treated systemically which covers all sources.

Lets all hope and pray that he responds favorably to this treatment, and has the strength to endure this as well. If these treatments don't work as we hope, the Docs have other tricks (drugs) up their sleeve to administer at that time. The goal is to WIN. As I believe earlier mentioned, he has a private room now with his own head, sometimes somewhat dangerous as stated earlier, and shower.

Until next,

Paul

Comment on Beth's post

Great shot Beth!

It printed out really well and will be framed and hung in my shop.

I doubt he's working though. It looks to me like he's seeking shelter from an impending mung ball attack by his loving cousins. You can almost hear them mocking him for hiding and taking a picture to preserve the moment.

Best regards,
Rob Emmet

update from paul

I must say how impressed I am with the VA's treatment of my brother. He has undergone more tests and studies in the week, a little over, that he's been there than he had in the month beforehand. He has a team of physicians and specialists that are assigned to him and see him during the day. Trap began chemotherapy on Thursday of a heavy metal type in a pill form. Two per day at the beginning then increasing to 10 over time. He also is to have a med port installed on Monday just below his skin to have another type of chemo pumped directly into his veins. He can also have blood tests taken from there as well so he doesn't have to be "stuck "all the time which he hates.

He is slowing down on the pain meds and unfortunately his food intake also. Any one who visits must give him a bunch of grief for not eating as much as he should. He needs all the strength he can get to withstand the treatments that are now underway.

Trap has a continual flow of friends visiting, which is awesome. It clearly has a beneficial effect on him. Thank you for the support.

Well, let's hope and pray that these treatments kick in and kick ass!

Paul

Greetings and Prayers

Trapper,

Thanks to Barbara, we have been following your progress over the past couple of weeks, it looks as if you are receiving the best care available, stay with it and keep the faith brother, we are all praying for you and expect that you will give it your best shot as the Trapper we know and love!!

Post for my favorite cousin.. GREAT PICTURE!!

Hey Cuz -

Boy, what you won't do for attention!!!

This blog is awesome and really must be giving you some good laughs and some great feelings - you've got a helluva lot of friends and family rooting and praying for you so PLEASE - try to do what the doctors tell you to do. I'm so glad that you're at the VA and in such capable hands and want to see your smiling face out on the water again, real soon!

I dug up this old picture of you (actually working!) at the Boat Works - I'm guessing in the late 60's? Thought you might enjoy it.

The family (all the "Buzzy Lippincotts") sends their love.

FOOD and Trapper Visit

Jamie Mangus visited for a while today and Dave and Marsha Malkin also stopped by. Cathi Anderson and Kathy Weber stopped by later in the afternoon for about ½ hour or so with too much food (KW). Not being critical, but he complains about the food so people bring him food…..the fact is that the fluid in his abdomen puts pressure on his stomach and he really cannot eat that much food. He REALLY enjoyed the salmon that Kathy bought, again he didn’t eat much, but he REALLY enjoyed it. I would suggest if people bring food, don’t over do it. The cherries were a hit!

I was there for a long time this afternoon. We had lots of quiet time. He has a bunch of magazines, sailing, sailing world, seahorse, readers digest, prop talk, spinsheet and a few others. KW brought him copies of some of the letters in the blog, he enjoyed me reading them to him. There is no wi-fi at the hospital. Otherwise it’s really great if people bring him the letters to read—may actually even be better because then he has something in hand. I took a photo of us sailing the Star to put on the shelf and Cathi taped the armadillo to the TV arm.

Once he starts a treatment routine, there will be a schedule set up so that the visits can be spaced and much more appreciated by Trap. Melissa Currier and Alex Hawkins have offered to help with that. Will let everyone know when we get to that point.

He has a huge fight ahead and appreciates all of his friends and their rally round him.

Just want to say hello

Hey Trap. this is your old NASCAR buddy Phil, and I might add your favorite bartender when I was at EYC. Kathy Webber is my accountant for my new Erie Insurance agency on the Eastern Shore, and she has been keeping me up on your progress. I am pleased that you are in good hands. I have read all the e-mails to you that people are sending and the one thing that remains consistent is that we are all telling you to please do what the Doctors are asking you to…..they do know best. Get well and you and I will go to that NASCAR race in Dover we have always been trying to go to. I have an autographed picture of Mark Martin (you always liked him) and the owner of the car he used to drive Jack Roush I will be sending it to you at the hospital. Take Care, your pal Phil.

News from Paul and the Oncologist!

Myself and brother Dave had a very informative meeting with Traps oncologist on Monday. There are more cancer cells in other areas, and Tuesday he will undergo a full body CAT Scan with contrast. This as well as a PET scan that will be performed probably Wednesday, should pinpoint all areas. Chemotherapy will follow to kill and/or reduce the involved areas. His oncologist is very optimistic that he and his team will be successful as he has been so in patients with the same issues. Trap will be there for a bit longer, and he will probably opt to stay at the VA facilities attached to the hospital duriing his treatments which could last 6 months, maybe more maybe less depending on how he responds to the treatments. He is getting stronger and is evidenced by him giving his nurses a ration of &*#@. When he entered the Center last Thursday he had multiple issues, and many of them have been resolved already. His care and attention there is fantastic and the caliber of his docs are of the higest level, well higher than I ever imagined along with the latest in testing and treatment equipment.

I truely believe Trap is in the right place, and he feels so as well.

Until later,
Paul

Thoughts!

My Dear Trapper:
Just wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know that you were one of Frank's favorite people and soon became one of mine after I met you. I am sure you could tell many stories about staying on the Houseboat.
I will be following your progress, so be a good boy and do what they tell you. I realize that will be difficult, but give it a try!I will talk with you when you get a little more settled.
With love and prayers
Louan

Trapper story

I would say back in about 1990 or so I was out with Hawkeye in the naval academy rib watching some spring time weekend racing. Hawkeye says to me hey there some Star boats racing out of the west river; you could tell they were Stars because the way they just shine from a distance like no others. So we headed down towards Thomas point, there must have been about 15 boats racing, we parked ourselves at the windward mark to watch. Then I say to Hawkeye, “look at this dude rounding in third, what the hell he’s by himself!”, in only a way Hawkeye could say it; “Chrriiist that’s Trapper” so we go speeding towards him after he sets the pole and starts in on passing the 2nd place boat, we pull up close and he takes one look at me and says “how much do you weigh? I yelled back 220 but I’ve never race Stars, he then told me to get my ass on the boat rite now, I jump on, he throw the harness at me and somehow I figured out how the thing fits on just in time for the leeward mark. He coached me through getting everything back in the boat and around we went without any real problems. He taught me how to race Stars and we raced the entire summer & fall season together, we could’nt beat Johnny Mac (hell still can’t beat him today) but we had some close seconds and thirds against some pretty good people back then.

Then there was that time when the TV fell on Trappers head at the Chart House! I told Trapper to stay we’ll down and call Steve Kling!!!, “that’s a lot of new Star boats that just fell on your head Trap”, no he just jumped up and we all drank on the house that evening, one of many classic moments.

Trapper, thank you very much for taking the time to teach me to race Star boats. Listen to your doctors as it sound like you have some of the best. Katie and I are sending our love and prayers for you to start feeling better.

Stay strong, your friend,

John Boone-

Great Pics from Kathy Weber!! Thanks KW

Hey You!

Hey Trap,

Just to let you know that each time Bobby steps his 420 mast (grunting), he always says,” I know Uncle Trapper can step a Star boat mast with one hand…so I am working on that!” He’s embarrassed that he staggers a bit when putting it in. And he remembers also how you told him “a 420 mast is nothing, Bobby.”

Glad to hear you are seeing some real doctors who can help you. Hope you get out of there soon. I know EYC ain’t the same without you.

We’re all thinking of you lots.

Big hugs,

Pucky, Richard, and Bobby

best wishes

Had a nice visit with Trapper today

Hi everyone, Bert Collins, Kris Wilson and I had a very nice visit with Trapper today. He was lucid and quite the old witty Trapper. We all had some great belly laughs. Trapper was filling us in with his days and describing the people in the halls—fights, parties, people being handcuffed, it was all quite amusing the way Trapper put it to us. Bert filled Trapper in on the weekend of Star sailing in Oxford. Trapper’s lunch arrived—a look at each of the dishes on the tray and that was the end of that; the tray went back to the nurse because Paul was bringing lunch from The Narrows restaurant. Trap vows to write a letter when he is released about just how bad the food is there!

Trapper is on pain meds so sometimes when you get to see or talk to him he is a little out of it. Today he was together and mostly keeping track of the conversation—not sure if it was the meds or just being 62!

As Kris and I were leaving we met Paul and brother Dave at the elevator. Trapper was expecting Amy to come with Paul today…wish I could have seen the look on his face when Dave walked in. The three brothers spent the afternoon together….oh, to be a fly on the wall and hear those stories!

Paul will have a report on the doc that stopped by tomorrow or the next day so be expecting another update shortly.

Random Pics from Barbara

News from Paul and Barbara

Now for the news from Paul…..

Trapper and I went to DC and enrolled him in the Washington DC Veterans Medical Center today. We got there about 1:00 and I left about 7:00. He hadn't still been assigned a room when I left. Trap is supposed to call me when he gets situated in a room.

As things were proceeding at a snails pace locally, I/we decided to enter into a full bore affirmative action situation, the VA. Upon arriving we were treated to a fast track of questioning, evaluation and testing right then and there. My confidence, and Trappers, level is way higher than it has been. The research over the previous weeks and discussions with physicians of all types lead us this direction. Pen Alexander, a member of AYC and the VA Hospital, had pre-arranged a fast track at the VA hospital from the time we arrived, a true advantage. Discussions with Pen were instrumental to lead me to make a plea to Trap that this is what we should do.

I will be at the VA tomorrow bringing results from previous oncology tests that have been performed locally that I will pick up in Annapolis, to help him not to be "stabbed and poked" any more than necessary. Valuable biopsy information that can be used just recently attained. I hope to be more informed by the end of tomorrow.

I feel that things are moving in a much more rapid pace, which I know as well as you, hasn't been happening to our satisfaction. Trapper feels much better about this, THANK GOD that stubborn cuss, as well as I.

We don't know exactly how long Trap will be there, at least a few days, maybe longer. He has his cell, however when he gets a room tonight he will have a room phone as well.
